To Our Visitors
Welcome to the Idaho Falls Downtown Rotary Club. Our club is a group of 172 members dedicated to making a difference in our local community as well as the international community by building strong relationships, holding to high standards of integrity in business and utilizing our gifts and talents in service. We meet weekly on Wednesdays at the Red Lion Hotel at 12:10p for lunch and informative programs. Our club is a wonderful, distinguished club that has a rich history of Service Above Self. Our goal is to utilize our gifts and talents in service to the local and international community. If you are an individual who would like to utilize your gifts and talents to improve our local community and the world in which we live, I would like to personally invite you to be my guest at one of our weekly lunch meetings.
To my fellow Rotarians
I am excited for this new Rotary year as your president.
I am pondering writing my first article for the July 2010 Rotary Newsletter. Having just
returned from my first Rotary International convention, I am certainly not lacking for inspiration. Many of my
club mates have told me stories about their experiences at various conventions held over time. Needless to say,
I was prepared to be impressed. What happened in reality was certainly more than that.
During the opening ceremony when we posted the flags representing about 200 countries, something
happened. It started in my left eye (I thought it was the humidity). As each country’s flag was presented,
one at a time, you could hear the Rotarians from that nation cheer for their colors. What a sight to see,
18,000 Rotarians cheering for each other’s flag. One of the biggest cheers was for the newly established
Rotary Club in Ramallah Palestine. Remember that problem with my left eye? Now I had the same
problem with my right eye as well. As it turns out, it was not the humidity at all, although I was clapping as
hard as I could and smiling as broad as can be, they were tears, for my heart was melting.
My fellow Rotarians, our club has a great legacy and an even better future. We as a club are part of a
1.2 million member movement, represented in 33,855 clubs, in over 200 countries. Our own district 5400
has over 20 clubs with about 2200 members. We have the tools, we have the values and we have the
network to change the world.
Maybe we don’t know each step to change the world, but we can learn.
Sincerely,
Mark Young
